HOME TOWN

Republic street Mbale town

I come from Mbale in eastern Uganda and apart from male circumucision
we also own other things, for example we have beautiful country roads
leading to owesome slopes of mount Elgon,we have many churches, almost
all denominations you have ever heard of,and yes the Thanks giving
feneral service of his excellency the late Milton Obote was held at St
Andrew's cathedral mbale. We have great schools ranging from
elimentally to tatiary institutions,we have a Major referal regional
hospital,Hotels, cinema halls, radio and Tv stations and most of the
things you would expect in a big town.
having all this back in my hometown, still I had to leave,at first I
never planned to stay away for long but then I think sometimes we are
not tall enough to have a glance at our future,I am not alone, many
other people my age, that is the 20-something commonly known as the
mellenials have also lefty their hometowns for Bigger ones.there must
be some serious reasons why someone mighty move away from their home
to some strange foreign location because in many cases it is a painful
experience to leave given the strong ties you have with people there.I
love or rather loved my hometown, and though I always dreamed of
touring around the world,I never had plans to settle somewhere away
from home,I did not plan to leave because no body did,and so to stand
at the highway cross roads to choose between hometown and other places
and you choose a place far off kind of seems a selfish
move, conciously sometimes I feel like,by leaving I said to my hometown
that "I don't like you because you are not good enough".
But what do you do when your town can't employ you,you see we have an
education curriculum that trains us to work for other people with
already established businesses ,and so when your hometown does not
have such businesses and you want to make use of what you learned at
school, you won't have any other option but leave .
It is not only employment that makes people move, some people run away
because of crimes, once my musoga friend told me " no musoga leaves
village unless they have committed some crime and mostly defilement"
,others leave to aquire a so called quality education, others just want
to explore,to change their environment,to see something new,you see
there is a human mentality that there are greener pastures the other
side of the hill, and so however much you will give them all the
products and services offered elsewhere where they want to go,they
will still struggle to leave. One political analyst commenting about
those who oppose the NRM ruling part said " I will put it more
grafically, see animals in the zoo,you can give them all the care they
need, food water medication, but they will never stop their struggle to
get out".so we are not any different from animals, the difference could
be that for us we move on two limbs unlike them who use all the
four.take the example of Adam and his wife Eve in the garden of
eden, they had everything to themselves,God asked them just a simple
thing not to eat from one particular tree, but because of that human
curiosity to discover the unknown, they yielded to the temptation.
So many people leave their hometowns or villages in the case of uganda
just to explore .
However the question is,will they ever go back to their hometowns. They
say "somethings are best solved once you ask yourself ' why ' ",a
necessary why brings a necessary how.
if your hometown can't handle your profession then I don't think
anyone would want to move back to their hometown and endure the stress
of people asking them what they do for a living .For those with
horrible memories about their hometowns, they rather stay away and move
on with their new life.
Our hometowns don't seem to change a lot,the infrastructures and most
of all the people there, they are always loyal to their conservative
way of life, you could stay away for a reasonable long period of time
but once you go back you will yes find out they have added on some
years but with the same attitude, same arguments and almost same
everything.
And for some of us who lefty behind great loving, kind, funny, beautiful
people in our hometowns, the day we shall be required to choose a place
away from where we are now,I will happily choose home, bugisu land
Mbale.
They say " you can't go back to your father's home after you have
lefty" but do people ever wonder who said that ? who said you can't go
home.' East or waste home is the best ',some of you left wonderful
things and people behind ,fathers ,mothers, grans, friends and
shamelessly some lefty their children.Yes you can edit your hometown
but like the good book says " there is time for everything, you can as
well Undo what you have edited.
